Southend, is home to the longest pleasure pier in the world, after the decline of many other famous piers, and stretches almost one and a half miles out to sea. It has been hit by ships, and modified by the effects of fire in its time, but has weathered the torment of both, and remains an important part of the visual iconography of the town.
A train service runs the length of the pier, taking visitors the long distance out from the coast. The prier is also home to Amusement Island and Sea-life Adventure aquarium. The Golden mile is where you will find the illuminations, part of the town’s Carnival in August.
Since the decline of the seaside resort in the 1960's, the economy of the town has been revived with an extensive plan of modification to the centre with many new shopping and leisure facilities. Any Southend hotel accommodation option would be excellently placed to take advantage of these facilities. The town is graced by three theatres; The Cliffs Pavilion, The New Empire Theatre and the Palace Theatre. It is also where you will find a vibrant and thriving club and music scene, with many famous and up and coming bands playing.
Electronic music is popular within the town, with clubs covering every aspect of this musical genre. The eponymous 1960's band Procul Harum, the name is an attempt to write 'far-out' in Latin, came from Southend, and conquered the musical world with 'A whiter shade of pale'.
With such strong roots in working class entertainment, the town has naturally produced a whole host of entertainers known not only throughout the country but also worldwide such as Lee Evans, Dame Helen Mirren, Phil Jupitus, and Dom Littlewood.
Transport is well established. As a commuter town, it has numerous services to the capital, as well as its own airport, London Southend, which is used for recreational and corporate flights, as well as a link with Jersey in the summer with flights every Saturday.
Visit Essex for business or pleasure, and you will find our selection of quality establishments just the ticket for a delightful stay in this vibrant seaside town. Choose from bright and airy single rooms, and charming double, twin or family rooms. Some Southend hotels may have suites providing luxury accommodation. Most rooms will have en-suite facilities of a bath and shower, or both, as well as colour TV, a hairdryer, a selection of complimentary hot beverages, plus an alarm clock radio.
Not all hotels benefit from their own restaurant and bar, but many have other leisure facilities such as a gym, spa, beauty salon swimming pool, tennis court and even access to a golf course to play a round or two. Whatever facilities your chosen Southend hotel enjoys, you can be sure of its excellent service and attention to detail, which will make your stay in this part of Essex, a relaxing and delightful one.
